Chapter 9 : I think the Start of Something New would fit best

As I made my way through the crowded corridors on Monday morning I could see a head of black hair leaning on my locker.

Sophie.

I reached my locker and she beamed at me, jumping forward to give me a hug, knocking me off balance to start with. I wrapped my arms around her, hugging her back just as tightly, surprised at her sudden hugliness (if that was even a word). She pulled back.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you," she said jumping up and down on the spot.

"For what?" I asked.

"Reuben came to my house yesterday and he just kissed me and told me he loved me, he told me you and Toby had been over at his house telling him to grow a pair and tell me, I can't thank you enough."

I wanted to burst into song I was so happy, I think the Start of Something New would fit best.

'Cos it's the start of something new -

"Brooke?"

"Sorry, what were you saying?"

"I was saying how will I ever be able to repay you?" She asked.

"You don't have to repay me, I was just looking out for you and Reuben, speaking of the devil." Reuben came up behind Sophie wrapping an arm around her waist and kissing her on the cheek. Both of them smiled widely at each other and Reuben leaned down and kissed Sophie's cheek.

"Hi, babe," he turned to me, "Hi, life-saver." I laughed at his new name for me; it made me feel happy that I was the reason for their happiness.

They turned off to go to History and I followed them until a hand grabbed my wrist from behind me and pulled me into the nearest caretakers' closet.

I turned to see my kidnapper.

Hayden.

I didn't need to hear what he had to say, my happiness was decreasing at the sight of him and I didn't know how long I was going to last without losing my temper in such a confined space with him.

I turned to the door ready to leave but Hayden's voice stopped me.

"Hear me out before you leave."

"What do you have to say that is so important for me to hear?" I asked him harshly, turning to face him.

"I'm sorry," he said, surprising me.

"For what?" I asked for the second time this morning and completely confused.

"For pushing you away from Robyn, that wasn't my decision to make and -"

The loud ringing of the bell shut him up and I turned, panicked towards the door, thinking of the best way to leave a cupboard with a boy following me without trying to look suspicious.

"I'm going to be late, bye Hayden," I said pushing the door open and poking my head out to check the empty corridor of people.

My spy surveillance was stopped when Hayden grabbed my upper arm pulling me back inside the small space and pulling the door closed.

"I'm not finished" he said.

"Why have you brought me into a caretakers' closet to apologise? You could have done it in the corridor." I asked, flabbergasted.

He smirked at me and took a step forward.

Uh oh.

"Caretakers' closet? It's a janitors closet," he laughed out.
